In January 20, 2010 Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Romania organized an event dedicated to the Anniversary of the 20th January Tragedy.

        Azerbaijani businessmen paying a visit to Bucharest for the Azerbaijani-Romania Business Forum, officials of Representations of Heydar Aliyev Foundation and State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic in Romania, heads and members of Azerbaijan-Romania Friendship Association, Romanian-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Azerbaijani residents and students in Romania, representatives of Turkic-Tatar communities and NGO's specialized in the field of human rights participated at the ceremony.

        At the outset, participants watched photo stands depicting 20th January Tragedy. Later on, participants observed one minute silence in memory of martyrs of the Tragedy. Briefing on the consequences of the tragedy Ambassador Mr.Eldar Hasanov stressed that in January 20, 1990 the empire army under the command of Soviet Union Administration violently attacked on disarmed peaceful people in Baku, slaughtering the decent sons of Azerbaijani nation who demanded the restoration of independence and raised their voices for the territorial integrity.

        Diplomat also emphasized that as a result of a Tragedy more than 130 people were murdered and more than 700 hundred people were injured. Mr.Hasanov reminded that the National Leader of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev who then lived in Moscow, despite his illness, came to Azerbaijan's permanent representative office - a day after the tragedy - and strongly protested the bloody act against Azerbaijani civilians, condemned those who committed the January massacre, thereby once again demonstrating his courage and bravery. Under his initiative 20th January Tragedy gained its political-legal value.

        People delivering speech at the event remembered the cruelties of Soviet army and expressed their assurances that Azerbaijani nation will never forget the heroes of that night who sacrificed themselves for the national freedom.

        The participants watched documentary "Road leading to Freedom". Press-release of Embassy about the 20th January Tragedy was disseminated to government and state officials of Romania, embassies and international organizations accredited to Romania, as well as NGO's. Romanian press issued articles about the Tragedy.
