        The presidential election took place in the Republic of Azerbaijan on October 15. Seven candidates were contesting on the election day. The total number of polling stations was 5,359, among them 33 stations in the diplomatic and consular missions of Azerbaijan in 27 foreign countries.

        Long-term and short-term election observation was conducted by more than 45,000 observers, including 1,258 international observers, invited by the Government of Azerbaijan, which represented many countries and non-governmental organizations, as well as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), the European Parliament, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM.

        The election day was marked by a high voter turnout. Out of 4,732,000 registered voters 75.6 per cent participated in the election. According to the latest report by the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan, incumbent President Ilham Aliyev received 88.73 per cent of the votes.

        As stated by the International Election Observation Mission, "overall, the Central Election Commission organized the election in an efficient manner, held frequent sessions which were open to the media and observers, published its decisions on its website, and carried out a large-scale voter education campaign and comprehensive training of election officials."

        The International Election Observation Mission concluded that the elections marked considerable progress toward meeting OSCE and Council of Europe commitments and other international standards.
